The Destroyers, without WR Damien Groce and a lack of
electricity lost to the Brigade, 34-47. They simply got bombarded by
a lack of energy shown earlier in the season.
Boy, did Columbus get bombed. 2 of 5 third down conversations, 42-27
completions on passing and riddled with penalties were the
Destroyers downfall.
“There’s no indication that this kind of performance won’t happen
again,” a disappointed Doug Kay commented. The Columbus Head Coach
has helped improve not only records, but overall hope for the team.
“There has to be a command performance to turn tables,” Kay
relented. The Destroyers know how to win at home. It just didn’t
happen tonight.
It wasn’t all Columbus’ fault. Kansas City came in 8-5, already
turning heads with AFL followers, being a young team in a new market
for AFL Football.
That and Kansas City quarterback Raymond Philyaw completing 21-33
passes for a total of 240 yards.
It sure didn’t help.
The 13,803 fans on hand were not as raucous as usual. The arm of
Columbus Quarterback Matt Nagy looked more like Bernie Kosar back in
the day. It just wasn’t coming together.
It even came down for one of the Brigade players colliding with a
Columbus Bombshell cheerleader on a pass block. It was just ugly.
At least, the Bombshell recovered and was back to her duties. You
could not say the same for the Destroyers.
On a brighter note, the Destroyers can still make the playoffs. They
do travel to Philadelphia(June 16th) and New York(June 23rd) next
two weeks. Both teams, Columbus has beaten. If they do this, they
are in the playoffs.
“Certainly, there is a shot,” Coach Kay stated with hope, “This
league there is enough parody that somebody can lose. We have
portrayed a winning football team. We can do this.”
