The
Columbus Blue Jackets three game
winning streak under interim
coach Claude Noel ended with a
4-3 loss to the Vancouver
Canucks at Nationwide Arena.
C olumbus was ahead 3-2 going
into the third period. Rick Nash
scored his 27th goal of the
season off a wrist shot at :22
in the 1st period. Columbus had
scored the first goal during
their three game winning streak.
Canucks Nolan Baumgartner scored
his first goal of the season two
minutes later to tie the score,
but Jared Boll potted his fourth
goal of the season moments later
to swing momentum back to the
Jackets.
Raffi Torres scored in the
second period to give Columbus a
3-2 lead, but Vancouver, in the
middle of a 14-game road trip,
didn’t let up and scored the
next two goals to secure the
win.
At 4:31 of the third period,
Sami Salo got off a slapshot
which beat Steve Mason and
shortly after,
Vancouver took the lead for good
when Mikael Samuelsson scored
his 20th goal of the season off
a fluky wrist shot that
deflected off Derrick Brassard’s
stick and rainbowed over Mason’s
shoulder.
"I don't know what to say about
it, it obviously was a lucky
one. Everybody saw that one,”
Samuelsson said.
"The (fourth) goal scored on
(Steve) Mason was a lucky goal,”
Torres said. “We played well
tonight. I don't think they
pushed us out or anything. We
battled back towards the end of
the period things just did not
go our way. Things are still
positive in the room which is
the main thing and we will work
through it."
After Samuelsson’s goal, Noel
called a timeout and gathered
his troops. Columbus outshot
Vancouver 19-9 in the third
period.
Vancouver goaltender Andrew
Raycroft started the game to
give Roberto Luongo a breather,
stopped 32 of 35 shots for the
win, and the 100th of his
career.
“When the game was on the line
in the third period, he did what
a goaltender was supposed to do,
and he gave us a chance to win.
The difference in the game was
the goaltending,” Vancouver head
coach Alain Vigneault said.
Mason stopped 31-35 in his first
loss in four games.
"I thought the game was an
entertaining game,” Noel said
afterwards. “From my standpoint,
I thought we played really well
in some areas. I really liked a
lot of things that we did. I
liked the way we managed the
game. The other thing I liked
was our effort. Our effort was
real good."
Vancouver was playing
back-to-back games and their
seventh game on the longest road
trip (14 games) in NHL history
because of the Olympics being
held in Vancouver. Including the
break, it will be 42 days
between home games.
Columbus plays Chicago at
Nationwide Arena on Sunday
before the Olympic break.
